Writing for all Ages: Author Interview with Carol Heilman

How did you come up with the idea of your current book, Agnes Hopper Shakes Up Sweetbriar?
My book began as a short story assignment in a writing class at USC. The professor asked us to imagine ourselves living in a foreign environment and then to step back and see what developed. I placed myself, and some of my friends, in a retirement home because we had often joked about such a thing happening. Before the short story ended, the characters had taken on their own personalities.

What do you expect people to take away from reading the book?
Listen to our seniors and give them the respect they are due.

What type of writing credits did you have prior to writing this book?
I wrote many human-interest type articles for newspapers and magazines and a book, Just Go, about a missionary couple serving in Haiti.

From the time you sent in your manuscript to your publisher how long was it before you got any feedback?
I met my publisher at a writer’s conference and worked with an editor soon after that. I was blessed to receive immediate and long-lasting support from both.

What plans do you have to promote your book?
Social media, book clubs, book fairs, and bookstore events.

Other than seeing the book in print what has been the most exciting part about having your book published?
Talking with gatherings of fellow writers and readers.

What have you found somewhat frustrating about the publishing process?
The length of time (which is often necessary) required for revisions and rewrites.

What do you know now about writing that you wished you had known sooner in your writing career?
Never, never, never give up. Winston Churchill

What advice would you give someone who wants to write their first novel?
Read, study, write, attend conferences, and join a critique group.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Remember to give thanks for your writing journey and the people you will meet along the way.

Hope you enjoyed learning more about Carol's writing. If you'd like to buy her books and learn about upcoming ones, here's the way to do that.
