How to Series: Marketing My Book by Guest Blogger, C. Hope Clark

Okay, I'm going to take a deep breath before writing this one. A DEEP, DEEP breath. Maybe three of them...or three hundred.

For years leading up to now . . . I talked about writing the novel. Years of work, edits, rewrites, throwing it away, writing again. Now I love the book, love the characters and what they grew into, and adore the voice I groomed throughout all those setbacks and do-overs. I could not be happier with Lowcountry Bribe.

Well, let me tell you something . . . selling a book is damn hard work. Yes, I cursed. It's worth cursing about.

I felt like a mouse, running around in a maze, bumping into walls, never finding the outlet, as I sought the best means to sell Lowcountry Bribe. I've learned there isn't one way. And I've learned that more people sell books, and write books, than read books.

Yup, I said it. I've said it before, too. Many of us prefer to write than read, and as a result, there are a lot of books to be read and too few people to read them.

Back to the deep breaths.

Selling books is time consuming, costly, and a test of patience. Some booksellers are willing to give a debut author a shot and others show you the door. The media is flooded with book suggestions, so they are numb about all the new releases hitting them in the face. The process of trying to prove you have a marketable commodity is a steady, chipping away process on this huge, raw, unshaped piece of raw material. One book here. One reading there. Another guest post, then another. Somewhere, deep inside that block, is your success.

You look at the calendar and realize it's been six weeks, yet you feel like time is slipping away from you as your book ages, and as others are spit out from the master book machine to take
its place. As much as I'd like to fuss at someone else for this situation . . . like many people do to Amazon, traditional publishing, self-publishing, agents, fill-in-the-blank, I can't.

I chose to be in this business, and I put myself where I am now. This is what I want to do. Publishing a book, like creating any new commodity or service, takes time to spread via word-of-mouth.

Can You Do 30 Meaningful Blog Posts a Month?

That is the question I hope to answer in the affirmative as I begin the 30 day challenge with NaBloPoMo and post daily. I heard about this writing challenge through another writer who is part of the CW blog chain that I participate in monthly. I will be discussing that monthly blog challenge tomorrow as I start rolling out my new changes in pictures for the month. I don't want my readers to be seeing the same photos day in and out.

If you'd like to be a part of this challenge as well, then you need to do it quickly as the deadline for the blogroll is the 5th. Here's the info if you would like to learn more and participate as either a reader or writer... http://www.blogher.com/nablopomo-youre-right-place.

The beauty of being a part of this blogroll is that you can either create your own daily topics or use one of their daily prompts. Today's topic is what you would request for a last meal. As it wasn't a topic that really interested me except in watching it on TV (The Cooking Channel did a over the top gourmand's view of the topic that I couldn't even try to improve with my own culinary tastes), I chose to use this day to invite you to join me in the blogging instead.

Hope you'll continue to drop by to cheer me on the for month. I know I will be doing the same for others. So until tomorrow...keep on writing and exploring the swirls of your imagination.

CELEBRATING 100 POSTS!!

Here's to my first milestone of 100 posts! I started slow and intermittent then became consistent. Thank you one and all who have read and commented on my thoughts.

From writing these posts, here's what I have discovered. First, many of them take longer than I expect. Especially the ones where I include a lot of quotes. I am very picky about what quotes I use which extends my reading and research times. The same goes for the pictures I use. I've really liked sharing my sidebar pictures with you of some of my favorite things.

Secondly, I really love doing the author interviews. It's been fun doing interviews with people I know and learning more about their writing. But even more so I enjoy doing interviews with strangers and getting to know them and their writing. It's been inspiring to me and I hope to others as well.

Other random thoughts...Some changes to blogs are intuitive, like re-sizing pictures by keeping the ratio of the two numbers that are in quotes after you input the photo and see the description. Others like changing font colors for specific areas are not. To get followers you have to work at it, they just don't come automatically unless you are a celebrity.

I also enjoy being part of a blog chain and getting to see the writing styles of others. The chain I post with monthly has poets which on my own I would not have searched out. Now I look forward to reading their posts and seeing the emotional way they can create a word picture.

Now it's time to grow some more with my blogging. I'm going to be branching out with a new blog. I'll still do this blog but I'm adding another. This new blog will be a journal of my experiences with starting over with a move across the country. I know making life changes can be scary, but I hope to encourage others with my experiences as a time of growth. Here's the link to my new blog... http://startingoveratxage.blogspot.com/
