Read and Be Curious: Author Interview with Ronaldinio Stickley

You’ve now published 3 picture books, but what made you decide to start writing the first one? Will there be more books in this series?

My first book, Reunited After the Storm loosely told my own story of adoption during the 2010 earthquake. It was a story I already knew because I lived it. I knew for a while I would some day publish a book and figured I needed to learn the process of doing so. I would publish the stand alone book at nineteen years old, after my first year in college.

You’re an indie author, which means you’re in charge of everything from writing to publishing and marketing. Other than writing, what other parts of the process do you personally do? What do you hire others to do?

Aside from the illustrations, printing, and shipping I am in charge of everything. I am the marketer, social media manager, accountant, and more. This includes creating A+ content on amazon, posters for vendor shops, running my youtube channel, and outreaching to schools or libraries. I may consider hiring someone to run ads on the books in the future.

What do you know now about publishing you wished you had known sooner?

I wish I had a better sense of marketing directly tied to Amazon KDP, specifically how to have a successful book launch. I have a business background and marketing but there is specific information one must learn when using Amazon self-publishing. The first 30 days are crucial in having a successful book. The more books you can sell and the more reviews you can get in this period will help your book get ranked to create organic sales.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?

As simple as it might be, you have to read and be curious. Essentially this means do not let go of your passion you once had as a child when it came to reading. The more you read the more understanding you have of tone, language, and structure.

Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?

Writing does not stop at the last period or your first copy in your hand. Writing is rather continuous, you must tell others of your work despite the want to be humble. Challenge yourself to create exposure for your books rather it be through facebook groups, local libraries, or nearby vendor shops.

What is the next book coming out?

I am still working on the next book and have not yet decided on a release date. The book however will continue the series of emotional regulation for children as the last two books have done.

  1. Great advice for writers. I, too, would like to know more about marketing on KDP direct.

  2. Marketing is the hardest for me. Apparently, Ronaldinio has several indie bookstores where posters can be placed for each book. Is that right?
