Celebrating a New Book Series featuring Vida Li Sik post Sept 15

Today I'll be introducing you to Vida Li Sik, an author, from a wonderful book series called Our House on Jakaranda Laan. All the stories in this series, take place in the fictitious town of Cedarfontein, South Africa. Read on to learn about her and her story.

Tell my readers a little about yourself.
I’m the third-youngest of 11 children, all born at home with the help of a midwife. Growing up in such a big family meant there was always someone to play with, someone to help with homework, or someone to fight over the meat that had disappeared from my plate.

I’m married to an amazing man I met at church who cooks, cleans, and irons far better than I do, and together we have two wonderful young-adult sons. I love hiking with family and friends, and chocolate is my favorite vegetable... it counts, right?

I also enjoy watching birds and love the African hoopoe (with its cinnamon-brown feathers and zebra-colored tail) and my absolute favorite is the hadeda, known for its loud and distinctive “ha-ha” call. I’m convinced they are relics from the dinosaur age.

Now how about some details on your book and time frame it takes place?
The Fixer’s Release is a women’s fiction story that takes place between the South African spring and summer (from September to December).

The Fixer’s Release follows Imka, who returns to a small South African town with her husband and two children after four years abroad. As family pressures mount and anxiety quietly takes hold, her instinct is to fix everyone’s problems—including those beyond her control. Through motherhood, marriage, and faith, Imka discovers that true peace isn’t found in holding everything together, but in surrendering control to God. It’s a warm, hope-filled story about anxiety, family, and learning to let go.

What inspired you to write this story?
I love writing about relatable experiences—such as starting over in a new country, sibling rivalry, and anxiety over everyday experiences as a wife and mother. The Fixer’s Release is the third instalment in Imka’s journey in the Our House series. After a traumatic experience, she and her family leave South Africa to begin again in an English village. In Our House on

Sycamore Street (Book 3), she learns what it means to be an outsider in a new community. In Our House on Heather Wynd (Book 11), she faces the challenges of sibling rivalry when her sister arrives for a visit. Now, back in South Africa, Imka must confront her deepest struggle yet: letting go of the need to control everything.

Each story stands alone, but I’m looking forward to bringing Imka’s three-book journey together in a single volume over the next few months.

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
If You Can Talk, You Can Write (Joel Saltzman’s book that started my writing and keeps me writing).

What other books do you have in the works?
The Dreamer’s Promise is book 5 in the Our House on Jakaranda Laan series. The story is about a promise a daughter made to her father, and dealing with the loss of a career.

First off, tell my readers your book title, the genre for your book and the time frame it takes place?
Hey everyone, greetings from Scotland. My book for Our House on Jakaranda Laan is The Fullback’s Try. It’s contemporary Christian fiction set in the present day.

Give my readers a short blurb about your story and characters.
The Fullback’s Try: A professional rugby player sidelined by injuries, a teenager embarking on an international rugby internship. What will faith, rugby and life in Cedarfontein teach them about following their dreams?

What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve been part of the previous two Our House series.

The Mother’s Song, Our House on Sycamore Street, introduced us to the McVitty family, specifically Miranda, the mum, and Naomi, the oldest daughter.

Then Tea Maker’s Blend, Our House on Heather Wynd, focused on Rebecca McVitty, the middle daughter.

So when Anna told me there was going to be a third series, I knew it was time for Joshua, the youngest sibling, to have his say. With the series set in South Africa, it was the perfect opportunity to write about rugby (we’re a house of rugby fans). But don’t worry if you’re not a rugby fan; you’ll still enjoy cheering for Joshua and Lourie as they pursue their dreams.

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
The best encouragement is reader feedback. Whether it’s someone telling me that one of my books has helped them on their faith journey, or encouraged them in a situation they were struggling with, or that they can identify with one of my characters. It’s the best feeling knowing that you’ve been a positive in someone’s day.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
In terms of giving advice, I would say: find your tribe, your kindred spirits, your community. Connect with fellow writers. People who get you and what you do. People who celebrate the wins and keep you going when it’s tough.

What other books do you have in the works?
I’m currently writing the third book in my Braid Hope series; a series incorporating faith, friendship, and healing in the Scottish Highlands. Winter Storms will be coming out in early 2027. It follows farmer Heather McAlpine and nature enthusiast Craig Richardson. The books are set in my favourite part of Scotland and are a joy to write, even though they deal with some heavy issues.

Today I'll be introducing you to an author from a wonderful book series called Our House on Jakaranda Laan. All the stories in this series, take place In the fictitious town of Cedarfontein, South Africa on Jakaranda Laan. Read on to learn about one author and her story.

First off, tell my readers your book title, the genre for your book and the time frame it takes place?
Hi, thanks for having me. My book is called The Enemy’s Sister. It’s inspirational historical romance and takes place in 1795 and 1820, when our fictional town of Cedarfontein is just being established and the British take South Africa from the Dutch. It’s very much frontier romance South African style!

Give my readers a short book blurb about your story and characters. 
The Enemy’s Sister: a shipwreck, a soldier, and holding onto faith at Our House on Jakaranda Laan.

John Beauchamp learned a lot of things in the army. Falling in love with the enemy’s sister wasn’t one of them.

Anneke Terblanche just wants someone to love her enough to stay, if only her heart hadn’t fallen for a soldier who has to leave.

Will Anneke and John leave their hearts behind on that fateful South African beach, or does God have another plan for this war-torn soldier and his faithful frontier girl?

What inspired you to write this story?

I never would have dreamed of writing a story set in South Africa until Anna Jensen invited me to join the Our House series on Jakaranda Laan.

I usually write books set in England during the Georgian Era. I didn’t know much about South Africa, or what I could write about. But low and behold, I discovered that the 1790s is when the British first came to power in South Africa, and I immediately knew I could write a story about a soldier who ends up falling in love while on campaign, with the enemy’s sister no less!

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
When God gives me the answers I’ve spent years trying to work out. And it’s probably because I have a deadline and therefore I devote more time and energy into working out issues I usually sweep under the rug of ‘that’s too hard’.

It can get tense sometimes as the deadline looms, but God is teaching me a lot about trust and learning to hear when He speaks to me and not my fear talking.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
Don’t rush it. Your first few books probably aren’t as good as you think they are. Get feedback from people who aren’t just trying to say nice things to you. Someone who can really tell you what your book needs, but also someone who knows that a newbie author doesn’t have thick skin yet.

Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?
Learn to pray a lot more! Writing goes so much easier when God is sitting next to you.

What other books do you have in the works?
In The Enemy’s Sister, John mentions that a Scottish fellow has fallen in love with his oldest sister back home in England, but something is preventing them from admitting how much they love each other. That’s the story I hope to write next! A Scottish hero visiting London in 1795 and an old maid in her thirties who has given up on her happily-ever-after because of how society views her younger sister who has Down Syndrome.

Today I'll be introducing you to an author from a wonderful book series called Our House on Jakaranda Laan. All the stories In this series, take place In the fictitious town of Cedarfontein, South Africa on Jacaranda Lane. Today, I'm featuring Anna Jensen. Read on to learn about her story.

First off, tell my readers your book title, the your genre, and the time frame it takes place?
Hi everyone. Thanks for having me, Christine. My contribution to Our House on Jakaranda Laan is the first book in the series, and is called The Mask’s Shadow. I’ve written a dual-time story, my reset in both 1922 and 2019.

Give my readers a short book blurb about your story and characters.
The Mask’s Shadow is a tale of family secrets, identity, and how the past can influence the present and future.

David Jones is summoned from South Africa to an appointment with a solicitor in Glasgow, Scotland, where he receives news of an unusual inheritance; the estate and belongings of his great-great-great grandmother, Lucy Jones, kept secret for almost one hundred years.

The bequest leads him on a quest for answers. Who was Granny Lucy?

What inspired you to write this story?
I knew I wanted to write more about Lucy Jones. She features in books from both previous Our House series — The Ferryman’s Light from Our House on Sycamore Street, and The Lady’s Companion from Our House on Heather Wynd. However, nailing down an actual plot and story wasn’t so easy!

Until I watched a TV show hosted by Sir David Suchet, the actor who played Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot.

The show followed in Agatha’s footsteps as she travelled around South Africa and the then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In addition to showcasing the various places she visited, the episode also traced the origins of one of Agatha’s early novels, The Man in the Brown Suit, to this visit to South Africa.

I hadn’t heard of the novel before, so decided I should read it. And in so doing, got the perfect idea for Lucy Jones and Number One Jakaranda Laan.

You’ll have to read The Mask’s Shadow to find Agatha’s cameo!

I'm a big Agatha Christie fan so you definitely have my attention. Now, tell me what’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
My first novel, Given Lives, tells the true story of the plague village of Eyam in northern England, a place I regularly visited as a child growing up in the area.

I sent the book through to the local church and museum, for their feedback. The museum sent a copy to a local historian. She responded with a note, saying it was the best account of the village and the impact of the plague she’d read.

Given Lives is now stocked in both the church and museum in Eyam, and sells many copies during the tourist season.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
On a practical level. Stephen King’s comment in his book On Writing to ‘write with the door closed; edit with the door open’ — basically meaning to write free from the pressure of what others may think.

Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?
As a Christian, I have the privilege of writing stories not so much for God, as with him. He's the Creator and the Father; Jesus is the author and the perfector; the Holy Spirit shares the heart and mind of Jesus. What better way to create and write?

What other books do you have in the works?
Following a recent research trip to Scotland, I’m about to start the reading and planning for a sequel to my World War II novel, Secret Lives. As this will be a full-length novel, I may be quiet from other writing projects for a while!

So Many Books! Where to Begin?

There's something about getting lost in a good book that never gets old. Reading has always been one of my favorite ways to relax. I don't need hours to enjoy it, either. Sometimes all it takes is a quiet ten-minute break during the day to recharge or a few pages before bed to settle my mind from thinking about everything tomorrow holds.

Even with a busy schedule, I usually manage to read about a book a week. For some people, that sounds like a lot. For those who finish three or four books every week, I'm just warming up!

What I love most about reading is how it carries me beyond my own life. Every story invites me into a different community, introduces me to people I'd never otherwise meet, and lets me experience life through someone else's eyes. While I usually gravitate toward contemporary fiction, this year's celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence has sparked my interest in stories set during America's founding years.

Most often, though, you'll find me reading sweet romance, women's fiction, cozy mysteries, and the occasional suspense novel. I don't venture into science fiction very often unless it features a compelling dual timeline or a touch of dystopian intrigue.

No matter the genre, I'm always searching for the same thing: memorable characters, a meaningful story, and people who are willing to grow, overcome obstacles, and embrace positive change. Those are the kinds of stories that stay with me long after I've turned the final page.

That's exactly why I'm excited to be part of this special multi-author book promotion. With 100 books to explore, there's truly something for every reader. Celebrating a New Multi-Author Book Series

For the past three years, I've had the privilege of getting to know many of the authors in this new book series through social media, blog interviews, and other writing collaborations. I've been a part of eBook box sets and collaborations with several other authors in the past. Most collaborative projects tend to follow a familiar formula—they're usually connected by a single genre or centered around a specific holiday, such as Christmas.

This series, however, is something entirely different. Instead of every book fitting neatly into one genre, Our House on Jakaranda Laan series offers a wonderful variety of stories. You'll find contemporary fiction, historical fiction, dual-timeline novels, and women's fiction. Some books weave romance gently into the story, while others place it front and center – all in a sweet and clean closed door romance style.

Yet what truly connects these books goes far beyond a shared title. Every story is set in the same fictional South African town of Cedarfontein.

Creating Cedarfontein was a collaborative effort. The authors worked together to imagine everything from the town's layout and local businesses to the people who call it home. There's even a map showing the town's location south of Cape Town. Because each author is writing within the same community, readers will discover familiar places and occasionally meet characters from other books throughout the series.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this project is that several of the authors don't live in South Africa—and some have never even visited. That meant extensive research became an essential part of the writing process. Having South African authors as part of the team to answer questions and provide guidance has been invaluable in helping each story feel authentic.

Readers may also notice that certain words are spelled differently from one book to another. For example, as an American, I write color, while my United Kingdom friends naturally write colour. Both spellings are correct—they simply reflect the author's home country. So if you spot differences like that throughout the series, don't worry. They're intentional, not mistakes.

Although all fifteen books share the same setting, each story stands completely on its own. There's no required reading order, so you can begin with whichever title catches your interest. Along the way, you'll enjoy seeing familiar faces and discovering how the lives of Cedarfontein's residents intersect from one story to the next.

I chose to join this series because it challenged me as a writer. My story pushed me well beyond my usual writing comfort zone. My heroine is from San Antonio, Texas. My hero grew up in King's Cross, London. They both arrive in Cedarfontein for work and find themselves staying at a charming bed-and-breakfast run by a couple from Normandy, France. Bringing together characters from different parts of the world has made this one of the most enjoyable stories I've written. I'll share more about my own book in a future post.

Hard Work for the Love of Writing: Author Interview with Chris Behrens

You recently published your third picture book, which is about basketball. What inspired you to write that book?

This is my second picture book, but my third children's book. I have a chapter book and two picture books. This basketball book was inspired by my award-winning poem about basketball. In 2023, my basketball poem received an award from Writer's Digest. I wanted to do more with it, so I explored picture books based on poems and felt I could create a unique book of my own. 

I added fun facts to each page, and all the reviews are loving those tidbits! The poem was inspired by my lifelong love of hoops, especially the annual March Madness basketball tournament. Around 2010-11, as I was completing my bachelor's degree, I was working on several creative projects. One being the poem. For several years, I would tinker with it every March and loved doing so, but in 2023, I decided it was time to finish it!

Tell my readers about the story. 
The book is about the love of basketball. It's about the heartbeat of the game and the love of the game. It's sort of a love letter to the game from every basketball player who loves the game and has lived on the court. Many of the pages also teach the game to those who may not know it very well. Of course, the wonderful illustrations by Bryan Werts bring it all to life!

What are your writing goals for 2026?
I have two writing projects that I started years ago. One is a picture book about Joan of Arc. My research will bring to light a unique perspective on her life that has yet to be seen. The other project is a novella/short novel based on my short story: The Paladin. That story was praised by Lorian Hemingway during her 2010 short story contest. She loved the story and sent me a personal email after the contest. We corresponded for many months after that. What a treat that was, to have contact with Ernest's granddaughter!

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing? 
Too many to list just one! But, the majority of my initial support and encouragement came from my writing professors at Dominican College, now a University! Professor Stephanie Stiles, Phd, was extremely instrumental in my creative pursuits. In her creative writing class, she pushed all the students to write and encouraged us to keep going. I actually had some struggles early on in her class, but by the end, I had created the story that Lorian Hemingway praised. It was born in Stiles' class.

Stiles's instruction and encouragement were the boost I needed to keep going after graduation! Professors Jim Ryan, Ellen Dolgin, Phd, Sister Nevins, and others kept pushing me and encouraging me to keep writing! I took many classes at DC at various times and on various days, but it all began with their "Weekend College" program! It was a very unique program that doesn't exist anymore. I am so thankful for that program.

Marketing is the biggest key to making sales. What is the best marketing source you've used that has produced more sales rather than just clicks? 
I am still working on this side of things. I never really focused on the marketing, as I was always so busy with the creative side. I am currently trying Amazon Ads and will continue to evaluate the opportunities to gain more sales. I believe the industry is overly saturated now that publishing has become so easy. I have heard many authors complain about slow sales...it's tough!

What do you know now about writing you wished you had known sooner? 
I think I wish I knew more about setting up Ads on Amazon or other sites, and also how to pre-order and push your books way in advance!

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give? 
The best advice is that it is work. There is no magic to it. Flat-out work. The harder you work, the better you'll get...period! And also to be consistent when you are working on something. Sit and work at it every day, even if the words don't flow sometimes, because they will if you stick with it every day. A piece of advice I can offer is to try researching when you're stuck. It has worked like a charm for me in all that I write.

Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?

How Reading Improves Your Writing: Author Interview with Marianne Rice

You have now published multiple books. How do you keep the writing fresh? 
As far as keeping my writing fresh? I read a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Last year, I read close to 200 books. I love to read across genres (all romance): small town, sports, sweet, spicy, billionaire, mafia, a tiny bit of fantasy, and even some dark. I’m a mood reader and a mood writer. I haven’t had writer’s block yet. My problem is I have too many books I want/need to write.

What are your writing goals for 2026?
I write under two pen names, and my goal is to be more balanced between the two. For Marianne Rice, I’m working on a new small town sports series. The first book comes out this summer, and I’m writing the second one now. And of course, the next book in my Balsam Grove Christmas series will be out in the fall.

With my other pen name (it’s spicier so I keep it separate from this one), I have a football romance releasing in March and a new mafia series coming out this summer.

Give me a short blurb on your latest book to entice readers to get it.
My last release was A Very Merry Rescue, a sweet holiday romance.

Olivia’s magical holiday event aims to find homes for shelter pups, complete with festive sweaters and twinkling lights. But when an electrical meltdown strikes, she reluctantly calls grumpy electrician Ethan Shepherd.

Initially there just to save the day, Ethan is determined to avoid Olivia’s chaotic holiday cheer. However, as snow falls and lights twinkle, her infectious spirit begins to thaw his icy heart. This season, they discover that the best things in life are often unexpected—and sometimes need a little rescuing.

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
Imposter syndrome is the worst. Whenever a reader reaches out to say something–anything–about one of my books, it lights a fire under me and it gives me the writing inspiration I need.

Marketing is the biggest key to making sales. What is the best marketing source you've used that has produced more sales rather than just clicks?
Great question. I hate going the sales pitch route, but I have fun making videos on Tik Tok and Instagram. They’re entertaining and show my personality, and sometimes my books. I’m not sure if they actually translate into sales, but for now, I enjoy it.

How I sell the most paperback books is at craft fairs, especially during the holidays. I meet so many new readers, and many of my newsletter subscribers who are local come out to see me. It’s great fun!

What do you know now about writing you wished you had known sooner?
Everything. :-)

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
My advice: write what you love. Don’t follow fads and trends if they’re not for you. Eventually, what you’re writing will BE the fad/trend. If your writing is forced, your readers will feel that.

What is the next book coming out? Can you give me a short synopsis?
Oh, the dreaded synopsis/blurb. Nope. I don’t have one written for my next release. Funny story. I write the book, edit it a few times, then send it to my editor, and THEN come up with a title and blurb. It’s when I book my cover artist that really makes me commit.

So, all I can tell you about my late spring/early summer release is that it’s a small town hockey romance with all the feels. Stay tuned for more details!

Tips for Creating Character Depth: Author Interview with Lori Soard

You have now published multiple books, but what inspired you to write that first book?
My first book. No one will ever see it. It is horrendous, but I learned a lot writing that book. I was always an avid reader, but I was bored with the same story. I had an idea for a romance novel with unique characters. They wouldn't leave me alone. I started writing for fun. My father-in-law was one of my biggest supporters in everything I ever tried. He loved that I was writing and bought me this electric typewriter. Back then, it would let you type a line or two and look at it before you put it on the page. It was a mini word process. It wouldn't be long until I bought my first desktop computer (they were expensive back then) and learned the world of full word processing, but that was my first foray into writing novels.

Tell me about your latest book.
I just released a new nonfiction book last week for burnt-out homemakers called The Burnt-Out Homemaker's Guide. My last romance was Meringue Melody, which is set in 1928 Maine in a tea room. It's part of the Apron Strings Tea Tales series with multiple authors. Each of our books is inspired by a fairy tale. I had the Little Mermaid. (I love this idea for a book series!)

What are your writing goals for 2026?
I'm releasing my first cozy mystery series. It will, of course, be clean and the main character is a Christian woman who has no qualms about witnessing to people when they are open to it. It will be called the Mildred Wiggins Mystery Series. Mildred is quirky and bold and so much fun. I hope my readers love her as much as I do.

What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
It isn't what you'd think. I've been traditionally published. For many authors, you'd think that would be the encouragement. What truly encourages me is when a reader emails me and says how something I wrote touched them or made them feel better or gave them new perspective. I pray over every book that God will use me as his vessel for just this purpose. When I get an email like that, it helps me see His greater plan. It isn't about book sales or accolades. It's about connection with other humans and sharing Christ with them.

Marketing is the biggest key to making sales. What is the best marketing source you've used that has produced more sales rather than just clicks?
Building my newsletter list has been most effective over the past year, but it is constantly changing. Facebook just had a huge update to its ads and I'm still trying to figure out how to best use ads there again. It isn't easy to market these days. There are many people advertising. I would tell people to be themselves. Let your personality shine through and those who are meant to connect with you will.

What do you know now about writing you wished you had known sooner?
You need to make time to write every week. You can't sit on your story idea for a year, telling yourself you're blocked. Just write. It doesn't matter if it's awful. You can always edit, rework sections. You need something to start with, though. I would advise even the busiest person who wants to write more to spend at least 15 minutes a day.

What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
I used to work with Fern Michaels when I promoted authors a gazillion years ago. She was so sweet to me and offered to critique a chapter for me. She was encouraging but pointed out something that I've always remembered. She told me to get inside the character's skin more. I had my heroine broken down in a snow storm and unsure how to get to safety and she stopped to notice the beautiful sunset. Fern was like, "Would YOU stop and look at a sunset if panic was setting in other then to note it was getting dark?" It was a good lesson in character depth that changed my perspective.

Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?
If you feel called to write, don't let anyone discourage you. You can learn better grammar, better plotting, hire editors. You have a unique story to tell that no one else has. God made you on purpose for a purpose and he can use that through your stories.

What is the next book coming out? Can you give me a short synopsis?
My Mildred Wiggins mystery will release this summer. It is titled Murder on Mulberry Lane. Mildred notices some strange shenanigans at the house on the hill, because she's always watching over her neighborhood. When she sees the police at the house, she knows they need her help and insight.
