I write because I love writing. Anything else is a bonus. The writing is never the problem. Having said that, my heartbeat still races when I hit the send button whether sending to publishers, editors, or reviewers. It’s a scary thing putting yourself out there, and it never gets any easier.
What inspired you to write that first novel?
A long while ago, my partner and I did voluntary work out in Africa. We lived in a remote village a long way from anywhere, without TV, telephones, and worst of all—books! This was before cell phones or ebooks. I’ve always been a huge reader, and it was hard.
So I decided that the only thing to do was write my own. It was fun, but the book was awful (a standalone novel set in Africa) and never went near a publisher. When I left Africa, I spent a lot of time travelling, and I stopped writing for a while. Then we moved to a remote almond farm in the mountains of southern Spain and again I ran out of books regularly. So again, I started writing. Now here I am!
What is the hardest part of writing for you?
The hardest thing for me is deciding what to write next. I have a lot of ideas and not enough time to write them all. At some point I have to put them all aside except for one. And I always have the question going through my mind – is this the right story to tell?
What’s the best encouragement you’ve had in your writing?
My publisher, who I have enormous respect for, reaching out to me with an outline she’d come up with and asking me if I wanted to write it. That was my novel, The Wall.
What do you know now about writing you wished you had known sooner?
I’m not sure there’s anything. Writing has been a journey and the pieces have fallen into place along the way. My process is very different now from when I started out. I’ve tried lots of different methods before discovering what works best for me. But it was all part of a learning process that I think every writer needs to go through. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to write, but there’s definitely a way that works best for you and only you can find it.
What is the best writing advice you’ve received or could give?
Write the sort of books and stories that you love to read. This business is hard; you have to enjoy it.
Are there any other points about writing you would like to add?
Making up stories is the best thing ever. You get to visit places you’ve never been, meet fabulous people, do things maybe not even possible in real life. Face your fears. It’s worth every bit of the hard work.
What is the next book coming out? Can you give me a short synopsis?
My next release is Deepfake: A Zack Wilder Thriller. It’s book 3 in the series and is in edits at the moment. It should be released in March 2022.
Deepfake: A Zack Wilder Thriller
Deepfake: a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.
Seeing is believing. Or that’s always been the case. Until now.
When FBI Special Agent Zack Wilder is asked to investigate the origins of a video of his brother having sex with a congressman, he’s shocked. And the most shocking thing of all: it never happened.
The video is a deepfake, but unlike any that have come before; it’s flawless, impossible to distinguish from real thing. The technology is new and it’s constantly developing. Fake videos, news reports, social media gone crazy, telephone conversations that never happened. The line between truth and lies isn’t blurring, it’s being erased.
And now someone is using that technology to change our perception of reality, making us believe the unbelievable, and ultimately driving us ever closer to nuclear war. Zack must delve into the murky world of deepfakes and disinformation. Can he discover who is behind the lies and why, before the world descends into chaos.
Now that is one scary thought and sounds like an intriguing read. If you'd like to learn more about N.J. Croft's books, here are some links to get you started.
