Learn From What You Read to Write Better: Author Interview with Jodi Artzberger

Most everyone thinks they can write a novel. What made you decide to write one?
I wanted to reach people with the Gospel. Not only is it in my story (the novel, not the Gospel), but I have the Gospel in the back of all my books.

What do you expect readers to take away from that book?
Forgiveness, redemption, and God’s gift to us in His Son. Also, being a romantic suspense, I wanted people to enjoy the story and see that love is work, but worth it.

What writing experience/credits did you have prior to writing that book?
As for being published, none. I started writing to middle school then got away from it. It wasn’t until I started reading Christian fiction that I thought about writing again.

How long did it take you to write your first
romantic suspense book?
Both writing and editing, it took about ten months.

Who encouraged you along the way?
The Lord and the beta readers He gave me at the time.

How many rewrites did you do on it?
A few… It wasn’t too bad. I knew where I wanted to end up, I just had to find the right road to get there

Who helped you with the editing?
Friends, other authors, and I did hire an editor.

Did you try the normal route and try to find a traditional publisher to handle your book?
I did. One publisher had an open call and I submitted “Don’t Give Up on Me” to it. They gave me a lot of good feedback and asked me to submit something else down the road.

When did you decide to self-publish?
When I got the open call rejection. I’m glad I did because I’ve learned so much!

Since self-publishing means you do it all (or pay someone else), what has been the hardest learning curve for you?
Balancing my time and watching my budget. I have spent a lot of time learning about self-publishing (and there’s still a lot to learn) that it’s taken away from other things. Now I’m working on the other things and trying to minimize the distractions. Because I want to write more!

What type of publicity do you do to promote your book?
My newsletter and group promotions have been the most effective for me. I adore my newsletter!

What do you know now about writing/publishing now that you wished you had known sooner?
Not all advice is good advice or applies to me. There is no one right way for everyone.

What is the best advice you’ve been given about writing or that you’ve learned that you would like to pass along?
Do what works for you and don’t lose your voice. Take a lot of classes and learn all you can. Read lots of books, too. Not just craft books but fiction books. When you read a fiction that gets you binge reading a series or a book that sticks with you long after you’ve read it, ask why? And learn from it. Also, don’t feel you have to do something to please people. Please the Lord first and honor Him.

Could you give my readers a short blurb about your current book?
Amanda’s life was planned. She knew her future, the future laid out for her because she was the heiress to Cragge Automotive. Until one night when she was left for dead.

Ryker had walked away and out of Amanda’s life eight years ago. Now, he’s back and he’s a changed man.

As the threats against Amanda continue, will she accept help from the only man she’s ever loved and who left Otter Bay without explanation? Is the wall she built around her heart big enough to keep Ryker out?

As a trained Army Ranger, Ryker is going to have to use his skills if he wants to keep the only woman he's ever loved alive.

Redemption changed him. Redemption calls her. A Gospel centered story about the power of God's love and redemption.

Any other comments about writing that you'd like to add?
It’s an adventure and you meet a lot of great people! It can also be cathartic. Have fun and enjoy the writing, enjoy the process!

That's all for today's interview. If you'd like to learn more about Jodi's books, here is the way to get started.
