Celebrating Thanksgiving Books 2021 with Zoe M. McCarthy

Today we're focusing on the holiday before Christmas, and celebrating a Thanksgiving book. Today's featured author is Zoe M. McCarthy who  writes contemporary Christian romances with heroes and heroines who learn to embrace their differences. Now let's find out about her Thanksgiving book.

How did you come up with the idea for your Thanksgiving book?
My husband and I are both retired actuaries. Actuaries prepare insurance companies’ financial forecasts, set prices, and calculate claim reserves. By far, most actuaries are introverts. Actuaries often must work with extroverted marketing reps. I thought, what if a private, introverted numbers guy and a vibrant, extroverted marketing rep were stuck together for a long holiday. What would that weekend look like? This birthed Calculated Risk and my opinion that opposites distract!

Could you give a short synopsis on the book for my readers?
What happens when an analytical numbers man meets a mercurial marketing rep? Romance becomes a calculated risk...

Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, actuary, Nick LeCrone, arrives at Cisney Baldwin’s office as her boyfriend jilts the vibrant insurance company marketing rep. In a moment of sympathy, he invites Cisney to spend Thanksgiving with his family on Lake Norman in North Carolina.

But soon, they both regret agreeing to spending the holiday together. She’d rather be skiing Colorado ski slopes with friends. He fears the queen of sticky notes will drive him crazy.

On the five-hour drive, he’s displeased with her two large suitcases, and she’s not happy with his silence and choice of music.

Now, Nick’s family loves Cisney and thinks the couple may be engaged.

What other books do you have in the works?
I’ve joined The Potter’s House Season 3 books. An Identical Woman just released in August. An Irresistible Woman will come out in November 2021 and Across the Lake in February 2022. I’m working on a two-book series of a Christian speculative fiction. And book two of my Christian allegories is scheduled for release in the next couple of months.

Any special events coming up?
In my speaking realm, I have been teaching workshops on writing to writer groups through Zoom meetings throughout the US. These workshops are based on my book, Tailor Your Fiction Manuscript in 30 Days. In October, I was the keynote speaker for our community Bible study’s women’s retreat.

You are one busy lady! What’s the best writing tip you’ve learned or been given you’d like to share?
Write, write, write while understanding we all need to keep learning and improving our craft.

What do you know now about writing and publishing you wish you had learned sooner?

I wish I had made earlier use of plotting tools. I believe the hero’s journey has helped me write more complete, satisfying, and richer stories that led to publication. And I wish I had known about the need for a good email list and review/promotion teams.

Any last words or tips?
If any readers of this interview are beginning a writing journey, I encourage them to persevere because that’s what is required to publish. Join writers’ groups, read books on writing, and attend workshops. I heard an agent say, “It takes writing four complete manuscripts to learn to write. Usually, the fifth one receives a contract. That’s what happened in my writing journey.

Are there any other books that you’d like to tell my readers about?
An Identical Women is the story of second chances for love with Trace McMillan or in life for Lattice Stone. Here’s the blurb.

Certified Nursing Assistant Lattice Stone attends the funeral of her patient and dear friend, the grandmother she never had. Trace McMillan has lost his Little Granny. At the funeral, he’s shocked to see Lattice who’s a ringer for his deceased wife for whom he’s grieved for five years.

Trace’s partially paralyzed father, Olen, is in need of a new caregiver and wants to hire Lattice, who’s highly recommended. But Trace is dead set against having a woman identical to his wife under his roof.

Lattice is unaware she mirrors Trace’s wife and would like to provide
private patient care for Olen, but she's unsure about how that will work out in caring for a patient's needs and dealing with Olen’s testy son on a daily basis.

That's all for today's interview. If you'd like to learn more about Zoe's books, here are some links to get you started.
